Between-Groom Maintenance: The Golden Rules

We absolutely love seeing your dogs looking their absolute best as they strut out of our salon doors, but keeping that flawless style looking fresh requires a little bit of teamwork once you get home. The reality of pet ownership, especially for high-maintenance breeds like Doodles, Poodles, and Shih Tzus, is that professional salon visits simply aren't enough on their own. The golden rule of maintaining a healthy coat is establishing a consistent at-home maintenance routine.

The most critical component of this routine is utilizing the correct tools with the proper technique. Running a soft bristle brush over the top of a thick coat does nothing to prevent tangles near the skin. Every pet parent with a coated breed needs to invest in a high-quality, long-pinned slicker brush and a sturdy metal greyhound comb. These two tools, when used together, are your best defense against the dreaded shave-down at your next appointment.

Technique is just as important as the tools. The industry standard method is called "line brushing." This involves pushing the coat up with one hand and brushing down a small section at a time, ensuring you can clearly see the skin with every stroke of the slicker brush. Once a section is brushed, you must follow up by running the metal comb through the hair right down to the skin to catch any hidden micro-tangles. You should pay particular attention to high-friction areas: behind the ears, under the armpits, and where their collar or harness sits.

We strongly advise our clients to resist the urge to perform at-home haircuts or attempt to aggressively cut out mats with kitchen scissors. A dog's skin is incredibly thin and elastic, and it is dangerously easy to accidentally pull the skin up into the mat and cause a severe laceration. If you discover a tight mat that you cannot gently work out with your brush and comb, leave it alone and point it out to your groomer at your next visit so we can remove it safely.
